BAE Systems Expands Portfolio with Acquisition of Malloy Aeronautics
BAE Systems, a global leader in defence, security, and aerospace, has announced its acquisition of Malloy Aeronautics, a pioneering company specializing in heavy lift drone and aeronautical technologies. This strategic move aligns with BAE Systems’ commitment to investing in breakthrough technologies that enhance its capabilities and meet evolving customer requirements.
Malloy Aeronautics is renowned for its innovative designs and supply of all-electric unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to both civil and military markets. With a focus on heavy lift quadcopters capable of carrying payloads ranging from 68kg to 300kg over short to medium range missions, Malloy Aeronautics offers cost-effective and flexible solutions compared to traditional methods, while reducing risks to assets and human life.
Under the acquisition, Malloy Aeronautics’ workforce of approximately 80 employees will continue operations from its Berkshire site, providing support to existing customers while collaborating with BAE Systems to further develop and accelerate the deployment of advanced UAS technologies worldwide.

The successful demonstration of the T-600 electric unmanned demonstrator aircraft at a NATO exercise underscores the progress made in advancing UAS capabilities.
Dstl Unveils £42.5 Million Centre for Advanced Defence Materials
Dstl has launched a pioneering £42.5 million research partnership, establishing the Defence Materials Centre of Excellence (DMEx). The initiative aims to develop cutting-edge materials tailored for extreme environments, crucial for enhancing UK armed forces’ safety and resilience.
Led by the Henry Royce Institute at the University of Manchester, the Centre brings together 23 partners from academia, industry, and research organisations. Defence Minister James Cartlidge praised the project, highlighting its significance in addressing defence challenges.
Dstl CEO Dr Paul Hollinshead emphasized the Centre’s role in maintaining the UK’s strategic advantage, fostering growth, and advancing defence capabilities. The initiative, set to commence later this year, marks a pivotal moment for innovation and collaboration in the defence sector.
With a focus on skills development and economic growth, the Centre aims to reinforce the UK’s leadership in advanced materials research. Additionally, Dstl is working with partners to develop cost-effective titanium solutions, crucial for defence applications.
MoD Awards £40 Million Contract for Heavy Machine Gun Upgrades
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is in the final stages of awarding a contract valued at £40 million to FNH UK Ltd for the Mid-Life Improvement (MLI) of the UK Armed Forces Commands’ in-service Heavy Machine Guns (HMG).
Outlined in a Voluntary Ex-Ante Transparency (VEAT) Notice, the initiative seeks to enhance the capabilities of the Heavy Machine Guns currently in use by the UK Armed Forces Commands. The contract will facilitate the necessary mid-life improvements to ensure that the weapons meet both present and future operational requirements.
FNH UK Ltd, recognized as the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and Design Authority (DA) of the HMG, stands as the sole entity equipped to undertake this project. The VEAT Notice clarifies that FNH UK Ltd possesses the essential technical information, knowledge, and expertise required for the successful execution of the contract.
The justification for awarding the contract to FNH UK Ltd is underscored by their unique capability and access to necessary technical support. As the OEM and DA, FNH UK Ltd is best positioned to ensure compliance with the MoD’s specifications, maintain operational performance, and guarantee the integrity of any modifications to the weapons system resulting from safety investigations.
Expected to extend over a five-year period, the contract will offer subcontracting opportunities, primarily focused on repair and maintenance services for firearms and ammunition. This subcontracting aspect not only broadens the economic benefits of the contract but also enhances the overall readiness and reliability of the UK Armed Forces’ equipment.
By investing in the mid-life improvement of Heavy Machine Guns, the MoD demonstrates its commitment to continuously enhancing the capabilities of the UK Armed Forces, ensuring they remain well-prepared to meet evolving threats and operational demands.
Babcock and Supacat join forces to deliver 70 advanced HMT Jackal 3 vehicles
The British Army received a significant boost with the commencement of production of 70 cutting-edge High Mobility Transporter (HMT) Jackal 3 vehicles. This project exemplifies the UK’s Land Industrial Strategy in action, fostering collaboration and innovation while strengthening the nation’s defense capabilities.
A state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, aptly named “The Raglan Building,” was established at Babcock’s Devonport site to handle production. This future-proofed hub boasts cutting-edge technology and a strategic location within the South Devon Freeport.
The Jackal 3 incorporates over a decade of advancements, offering enhanced crew protection, increased payload capacity, and superior off-road performance. Its transformability from a 4×4 to a 6×6 vehicle further enhances its versatility.
The project plays a pivotal role in strengthening the South West’s economy. Nearly the entire supply chain stems from the UK, with over 100 new jobs created and a focus on skills development.
